The recent Secondary 1 posting outcomes were “comparable” to those of the previous cohort, with more than 80 per cent of pupils being posted to a school of their first, second or third choice. Also similar to previous years, more than nine in 10 secured a place in one of the six schools they chose, said the Ministry of Education (MOE). Most pupils who needed a tie-breaker were sorted by citizenship and school choice order, with about one in 10 going through computerised balloting, said a spokeswoman for MOE. A total of 2,442 students in Singapore sat the IB diploma exams in November 2024. Their average score was 38.4, higher than the global average of 29.2. The Switzerland-based IB organisation, which conducts the exams, said that diploma programme and career-related programme students in Singapore received their results on Dec 17. There were 21,894 candidates globally. In 2023, Singapore students’ average score was 37.8 out of 45, higher than the global average of 29.1.

Arrangements have been made for school candidates to receive their results from their secondary schools from 2.00pm on Monday, 16 December 2024. Details on the collection arrangements will be shared by the respective schools.

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (Timss), conducted every four years, evaluates grade four and grade eight students – equivalent to Singapore’s Primary 4 and Secondary 2 levels – in their understanding, application and reasoning in maths and science.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) is discussing a different canteen operating model with schools that face challenges finding stallholders to fill their vacant stalls. Filling vacant stalls may become more challenging in the future as more stallholders retire, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing told parliament on Tuesday (Nov 12). "In anticipation of such challenges, MOE is discussing with schools which are keen and ready to adopt a different canteen operating model," he said. One such model is for meals to be preordered and prepared at a central kitchen before being delivered to schools.

We Care Community Services, an addiction recovery centre, said it has seen over 20 per cent more referrals for gaming addictions post-pandemic, compared with pre-Covid-19 years like 2019. More queries and calls from schools and parents about digital addiction issues have also been coming in over the past three years, it said.

The most recent Joint Autonomous Universities Graduate Employment Survey released in February found that fewer graduates found work six months after leaving university in 2023 compared to the cohort in 2022. The survey polled 10,900 fresh graduates in the labour force from NTU and other autonomous universities here including the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Singapore Management University and the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). Of those polled, 6.8 per cent were unemployed and still looking for a job, which was more than 2022’s figure of 3.6 per cent of the cohort. As for the contract duration of the jobs graduates had found, the percentage of those in full-time permanent employment had dropped to 84.1 per cent in 2023, down from 87.5 per cent in 2022.

A table tennis coach has been dismissed by Presbyterian High School (PHS) after it found that he had asked students under his charge to join his private sports academy. The school conducted investigations after it received feedback about the coach, said principal Angeline Chan in response to queries from The Straits Times. Neither the Ministry of Education (MOE) nor the school confirmed the coach’s name. As the coach’s action was a breach of his contract, the school terminated his services immediately, said Mrs Chan.

Lightspeed Systems will be centrally deployed to students’ Chromebooks by the end of November 2024, and those who use iPads will go through guided onboarding for Jamf in January 2025.

More students will be able to pursue diplomas at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), as the institute adds more of such courses. And these ITE diploma graduates are earning a salary that is comparable with those of polytechnic diploma graduates.

From 2026, pupils who do well in the subject in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) will be able to take higher mother tongue languages (HMTLs) in Secondary 1, regardless of their overall PSLE score. These are pupils who score AL1 or AL2 – the two highest possible scores – in their mother tongue, or a distinction or merit in HMTL in the PSLE.

A new application to manage the use of students’ devices is slated to be rolled out by January 2025, after the Ministry of Education (MOE) terminated the existing Mobile Guardian app in all students’ iPads and Chromebooks.

Currently, around 40 schools are looking for operators, with a handful missing more than one stall. Stallowners staying the course are struggling with rising costs and getting on in years. The last of all affected devices by Mobile Guardian’s glitch and cyber-security breach will be fixed by Aug 16 as schools double down on restoration, with priority given to students sitting for their O-level examinations this year, said the Ministry of Education (MOE).

The EdTech Masterplan was launched in September 2023, with the aim to make education more customisable for each student.

A mobile device management app used by 127 schools in Singapore to oversee students' personal learning devices was unfortunately compromised, leading to a data breach. The Ministry of Education (MOE) disclosed that names and e-mail addresses of some users were exposed in the incident. The app, known as MDM, is designed to assist schools in managing the usage of personal learning devices, ensuring they are used appropriately for educational purposes. Upon discovering the breach, MOE promptly disabled the affected servers and reported the incident to the police. They are currently investigating the matter and working to bolster the security of the system. MOE has also reached out to the affected schools to provide support and guidance.
